The Las Inc of the PW Residency : Where has it left us?

‘From the conversations PW were having during this Incubation it was obvious that participants had very different ideas of what it was they were involved in making. The Residency was coming to an end and in this final Incubation it felt unclear what PW had to show for it. Something that I was calling ‘The Configurations’. Definitely not a play.

I had no idea what names or statuses it had in the minds of my collaborators – by this point I had become the groups collective memory and archive. This was a problem – whatever it was we were making was definitely not open-source and readily accessible.

But the mood was good. It had been a crazy experience working so closely together.

I spent the next few months thinking about these issues. The diagrams give the best sense of these thoughts:

Finally, 2 remedial paths forward were found – a survey, and a documentary – along with a revised idea of what it was we were working on – no longer a play, but a modular, multi-media set of art objects giving access to a shared mythology.

The introduction to the Survey, which was circulated around PW in March 2025 as Incubation 5, read :

During the last Incubation [Inc 4 – ‘The Wall of Tasks’] I realised that each participant in the Incubations has quite a different conception of what it is that they’re working on.

Collaborative art-making requires a shared conception of what it is that is being made, or does it… ‘
